{"id":105115,"date":"2024-01-29T01:37:05","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T06:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/?p=105115"},"modified":"2024-01-29T01:37:05","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T06:37:05","slug":"why-we-quit-ecowas-burkina-faso-mali-niger-opens-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2024\/01\/29\/why-we-quit-ecowas-burkina-faso-mali-niger-opens-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Why We Quit ECOWAS, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Opens Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have announced that their immediate withdrawal from the West African bloc <a href=\"https:\/\/africadailynews.net\/2023\/07\/09\/buhari-felicitate-with-tinubu-on-ecowas-chairmanship.html\">ECOWAS<\/a>, was because it has become a threat to member states.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The leaders of the three Sahel nations issued a statement saying it was a \u201csovereign decision\u201d to leave the Economic Community of West African States \u201cwithout delay\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Struggling with jihadist violence and poverty, the regimes have had tense ties with ECOWAS since coups took place in Niger last July, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>All three \u2014 founding members of the bloc in 1975 \u2014 were suspended from ECOWAS with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions as the bloc tried to push for the early return of civilian governments with elections.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctions were an \u201cirrational and unacceptable posture\u201d at a time when the three \u201chave decided to take their destiny in hand\u201d \u2014 a reference to the coups that removed civilian administrations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Read Also: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2023\/12\/23\/ecowas-delegation-visits-sierra-leone-after-coup-attempt\/\">ECOWAS Delegation Visits Sierra Leone After \u2018Coup\u2019 Attempt<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The three nations have hardened their positions in recent months and joined forces in an \u201cAlliance of Sahel States\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders\u2019 joint statement added that 15-member ECOWAS, \u201cunder the influence of foreign powers, betraying its founding principles, has become a threat to member states and peoples\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They accused the grouping of failing to help them tackle the jihadists who swept into Mali from 2012 and then on to Burkina and Niger.<\/p>\n<p>But leaving ECOWAS could make trade more difficult for the three land-locked nations, making goods more expensive, and could also see visa requirements re-imposed for travel.<\/p>\n<p>Under pressure from the military regimes, former colonial power France has removed ambassadors and troops and watched Russia fill the void militarily and politically.<\/p>\n<p>Africa Today News, New York reports that the French army\u2019s withdrawal from the Sahel \u2014 the region along the Sahara desert across Africa \u2014 has heightened concerns over the conflicts spreading southward to Gulf of Guinea states Ghana, Togo, Benin and Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister appointed by Niger\u2019s regime on Thursday blasted ECOWAS for \u201cbad faith\u201d after the bloc largely shunned a planned meeting in Niamey.<\/p>\n<p>Niger had hoped for an opportunity to talk through differences with fellow states of ECOWAS which has cold-shouldered Niamey, imposing heavy economic and financial sanctions following the military coup that overthrew elected president Mohamed Bazoum.<\/p>\n<p>Niger\u2019s military leaders, wrestling with high food prices and a scarcity of medicines, have said they want up to three years for a transition back to civilian rule.<\/p>\n<p>In Mali, the ruling officers under Colonel Assimi Goita had pledged to hold elections in February this year, but that has now been pushed back to an unknown date.<\/p>\n<p>Burkina Faso, which has not been put under sanctions although Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in September 2022, has set elections for this summer, but says the fight against the insurgents remains the top priority.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/\"><strong>Africa Today News, New York<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have announced that their immediate withdrawal from the West African bloc ECOWAS, was because it has become a threat to member states.
