The federal government of Nigeria has announced an immediate ban on alcoholic beverages<\/a> produced in sachets less than 200ml, Africa Today News, New York reports.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Mojisola Adeyeye made this disclosure on Monday while addressing the media over the development\u00a0in Abuja.<\/p>\n

She said the five-year window given to the manufacturers of the products to stop producing the drinks in sachets and pet bottles which began in 2018 elapsed on January 31, 2024.<\/p>\n

She said enforcement of the ban commenced on February 1, 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis decision was based on the recommendation of a high-powered committee of the Federal Ministry of Health and NAFDAC on one hand, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the Industry represented by the Association of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employers (AFBTE), Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN), in December 2018.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a commitment to the decision reached at the end of this Committee meeting, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume agreed to reduce the production by 5 percent with effect from 31st January 2022 while ensuring the product is completely phased out in the country by 31st January 2024,\u201d she was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

In another report, in response to a widely shared social media post,NAFDAC<\/a>\u00a0is undertaking an investigation into claims that a woman fried plantain chips using oil adulterated with polythene.<\/p>\n

NAFDAC, through its Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, conveyed in a statement on Saturday that it is adopting a scientific approach to substantiate the claim before undertaking any course of action.<\/p>\n

Reaffirming its dedication to public health, the agency assured citizens of its unwavering commitment to ensuring the well-being of the public in light of the troubling allegation.<\/p>\n
