{"id":111458,"date":"2024-05-01T04:25:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-01T08:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/?p=111458"},"modified":"2024-05-01T04:25:51","modified_gmt":"2024-05-01T08:25:51","slug":"new-york-judge-threatens-to-jail-trump-over-gag-violations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2024\/05\/01\/new-york-judge-threatens-to-jail-trump-over-gag-violations\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Judge Threatens To Jail Trump Over Gag Violations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The New York judge presiding over <a href=\"https:\/\/africadailynews.net\/2023\/05\/11\/trumps-prosecution-a-good-way-to-check-impunity.html\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> hush money trial yesterday fined the former president for defying a gag order while also sending a further warning that violations could see him thrown in jail.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Africa Today News, New York reports that the 77 year old Mr Trump, is accused of falsifying business records to reimburse his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels just days ahead of the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the high-profile trial \u2014 the first ever of a former US president \u2014 Judge Juan Merchan ordered Trump not to publicly attack witnesses, jurors or court staff and their relatives.<\/p>\n<p>Merchan held Trump in contempt of court for multiple violations of the partial gag order.<\/p>\n<p>He fined Trump $1,000 each for nine specific instances, and instructed him to remove seven \u201coffending posts\u201d from his Truth Social account and two from a campaign website by Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Lamenting that he could not impose a fine \u201cmore commensurate with the wealth of the contemnor,\u201d the judge warned the former president that he could be sent to jail if he continues to violate the gag order.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Read Also: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2024\/04\/26\/trump-berates-biden-over-bleached-hair-comments\/\">Trump Berates Biden Over \u2018Bleached\u2019 Hair Comments<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDefendant is hereby warned that the Court will not tolerate continued willful violations of its lawful orders and that if necessary and appropriate under the circumstances, it will impose an incarceratory punishment,\u201d Merchan said.<\/p>\n<p>The judge delivered his order before testimony resumed in Trump\u2019s historic trial, which is restricting his time on the campaign trail less than seven months before his likely November election rematch with Democrat Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors allege that Trump made the hush money payment to Daniels to silence her about an alleged 2006 sexual encounter that could have potentially derailed his 2016 White House bid.<\/p>\n<p>Trump denies having sex with Daniels and has used appearances outside the Manhattan courtroom to rail against his indictment, claiming it is a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d by Democrats to torpedo his campaign to recapture the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d much rather be in Georgia. I\u2019d much rather be in Florida,\u201d the Republican candidate told reporters on Tuesday. \u201cI\u2019d like to be able to campaign. Biden\u2019s out campaigning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking the witness stand on Tuesday was Keith Davidson, who served as an attorney for Daniels and Karen McDougal, a Playboy model who also claimed to have had an affair with Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Davidson told the court he was negotiating before the 2016 election to sell McDougal\u2019s story to ABC News or American Media Inc, publisher of the National Enquirer tabloid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a blockbuster Trump story,\u201d Davidson told National Enquirer editor-in-chief Dylan Howard in a message, to which Howard replied \u201cDid he cheat on Melania?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDougal\u2019s story was eventually purchased by AMI for $150,000 and then buried, according to testimony last week by David Pecker, the former publisher of the tabloid, a scheme known in the industry as \u201ccatch and kill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked why McDougal preferred to sell her story to AMI, Davidson said \u201cbecause she, at that time, she had announced her desire to not tell the story of her interlude with Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Testifying before Davidson was Gary Farro, a former senior managing director of the now defunct First Republic Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen, Trump\u2019s \u201cfixer,\u201d set up an account at First Republic in the name of a company called Essential Consultants to arrange for the payment to Daniels.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen, who has become a vocal Trump critic, and Daniels are expected to be star prosecution witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the New York case, Trump has been indicted in Washington and Georgia on charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>He also faces charges in Florida of allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/\"><strong>Africa Today News, New York<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York judge presiding over Donald Trump\u2019s hush money trial yesterday fined the former president for defying a gag order while also sending a further warning that violations could see him thrown in jail.
