{"id":111623,"date":"2024-05-03T09:04:55","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T13:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/?p=111623"},"modified":"2024-05-03T09:04:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T13:04:55","slug":"minimum-wage-we-are-reviewing-what-we-can-pay-governors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2024\/05\/03\/minimum-wage-we-are-reviewing-what-we-can-pay-governors\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum Wage: We Are Reviewing What We Can Pay \u2014 Governors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Despite assurances from the Federal Government that the new minimum wage will take effect from May 1, 2024, the Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum (NGF), has asserted that it is currently reviewing its individual fiscal space as state govern\u00adments and the consequential impact of various recommendations, to arrive at an improved <a href=\"https:\/\/africadailynews.net\/2022\/09\/20\/fg-seriously-considering-minimum-wage-review-ngige.html\">minimum wage<\/a> they can pay sustainably.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Africa Today News, New York reports that organized labor is asking for N615,000 as minimum wage up from N30,000 for workers.<\/p>\n<p>The observations of the governors were contained in a communique is\u00adsued after the end of the meeting of the NGF held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, which was made available to newsmen in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>NGF reiterated that the 37-member tripartite commit\u00adtee inaugurated on the National Minimum Wage is still in con\u00adsultation and yet to conclude its work.<\/p>\n<p>The communique which was signed by the Chairman of NGF, AbdulRahman Abdul\u00adRazaq, Kwara State governor, acknowledged various initia\u00adtives adopted of recent by way of wage awards and partial wage adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We, members of the Nige\u00adria Governors\u2019 Forum (NGF), at our meeting held today, de\u00adliberated on various issues of national importance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Forum celebrates with workers across the country for their dedication to service and patience, as we work with the Federal Government, labour, organised private sector and rel\u00adevant stakeholders in arriving at an implementable national minimum wage.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Read Also: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2024\/05\/03\/states-can-pay-proposed-%e2%82%a6615000-minimum-wage-ajaero-insists\/\">States Can Pay Proposed \u20a6615,000 Minimum Wage, Ajaero<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWhile we acknowledge various initiatives adopted of recent by way of wage awards and partial wage adjustments, it is imperative to state that the 37-member tripartite commit\u00adtee inaugurated on the National Minimum Wage is still in con\u00adsultation and yet to conclude its work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs members of the com\u00admittee, we are reviewing our individual fiscal space as state governments and the conse\u00adquential impact of various recommendations, to arrive at an improved minimum wage we can pay sustainably. We re\u00admain committed to the process and promise that better wages will be the invariable outcome of ongoing negotiations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMembers received the out\u00adgoing Country Director, Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, and the incoming Country Director, Mr. Ndiame Diop of the World Bank, to discuss the bank\u2019s vision for transitioning. Mr. Chaudhuri appreciated the Forum for the strategic role it continues to play in coordinat\u00ading collective action for develop\u00admental change.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe applauded the non-parti\u00adsan character of the Forum, the professionalism of its secretari\u00adat, and state governments\u2019 com\u00admitment to mutual account\u00adability mechanisms such as performance-based financing interventions by the bank.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMembers expressed confi\u00addence in the choice of Mr. Diop to lead the collaboration going forward and look forward to a sustained and deepened rela\u00adtionship.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Forum discussed the revised National Policy on Jus\u00adtice (2024 -2028) from the just concluded National Summit on Justice on 24th &amp; 25th April 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMembers agreed to con\u00adsider the submissions from the summit as may concern their individual states, including rec\u00adommended legal amendments, administrative improvements, and policies to strengthen the justice sector.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAlso, the Forum committed to looking into issues bordering on remuneration of state judi\u00adcial officers and the infrastruc\u00adture of the courts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Forum received a pre\u00adsentation from the National Human Capital Development (HCD) Programme \u2013 Core Working Group Secretariat, led by Ms. Rukaiya El-Rufai and Dr. Ahmad Abdulwahab. Both highlighted the marginal progress made by states and its contribution to Nigeria\u2019s Human Development Index (HDI), especially across health, nutrition, education, and labour force participation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHaving reviewed the pre\u00advious programme design and national strategy, a revised gov\u00adernance and implementation roadmap was proposed to scale up impact and ensure sustain\u00adability. Members pledged to sup\u00adport the effective domestication of proposed revisions to the na\u00adtional HCD strategy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMembers received a briefing from Mrs. Oyinda Adedokun, Programme Man\u00adager, State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER), Federal Ministry of Finance Programme Coordination Unit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe briefing highlighted states\u2019 performance in imple\u00admenting advocated reforms relating to land administra\u00adtion; regulatory framework for private investment in fiber optic infrastructure; services provided by investment promo\u00adtion agencies and public-private partnership units; efficiency and transparency of govern\u00adment-to-business services, un\u00adder the World Bank financed programme.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Forum commiserated with the governors of Rivers State, H.E Siminalayi Fubara and Ogun State, H.E Prince Dapo Abiodun, over the petrol tanker explosion and gas explo\u00adsion that occurred on 26th and 27th April 2024, respectively.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Members called for prop\u00ader maintenance of trucks especially those fitted to con\u00advey Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and recommended appropriate training for truck drivers.
