The President of Russia<\/a>, Vladimir Putin was officially sworn into office on Wednesday at a lavish Kremlin ceremony for a record-breaking fifth term with more power than ever before.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Africa Today News, New York reports that the 71-year-old has ruled Russia since the turn of the century, securing a fresh six-year mandate in March after winning presidential elections devoid of all opposition.<\/p>\n

In his fifth presidential inauguration speech, Putin promised a victorious and stronger Russia despite the current difficult period.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will pass through this difficult, decisive period with dignity and become even stronger,\u201d Putin said at his inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin, attended by an AFP journalist.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are a united and great nation,\u201d Putin said in an upbeat speech, to applause from an audience of around 2,500 people including officials and military top brass.<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether we will overcome all obstacles, achieve everything we have planned, and together we will win,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said after being sworn into office that he viewed the presidency as a \u201chuge honour, responsibility and sacred duty\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Russian leader vowed to ensure \u201csustained and stable development, unity and independence of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

Putin thanked soldiers taking part in what Russia calls a \u201cspecial military operation\u201d in Ukraine, more than two years after it began on February 24, 2022, at a ceremony attended by some of those fighting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are looking forward confidently,\u201d Putin stressed in his speech, which was aired on national television.<\/p>\n

Evoking the country\u2019s \u201cthousand-year history\u201d as he spoke in the Kremlin\u2019s gilded St Andrew\u2019s Hall, the president said that present-day Russians owed a debt to previous generations who achieved \u201csuch triumphs that inspire us today\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said Russians shared a \u201cfirm conviction that we ourselves alone will determine the fate of Russia for the sake of present and future generations\u201d.<\/p>\n

Russia is \u201cnot refusing dialogue with western states\u201d and is ready to talk about \u201cquestions of security and strategic stability\u201d, Putin said, \u201cbut only on equal terms, respecting the interests of each other\u201d.<\/p>\n
