The owner of the $20 billion Dangote Refinery, Aliko Dangote<\/a> has blamed the absence of new refineries in the continent in the past 35 years on the beneficiaries of fuel importation in other African countries.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dangote made this known in a statement during a recent conversation with CNN\u2019s reporter, Eleni Giokos, at his refinery in Lagos, Nigeria.<\/p>\n

According to Dangote, other reasons for the absence of new refineries in Africa include a lack of loan facilities for investors, attributed to weak financial institutions among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are other countries in Africa who have been trying to build refineries but have been unable to. There has not been a new refinery in Africa in the last 35 years.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many issues regarding this such as money, political will, and also people who are benefitting from this whole system of importing petroleum products into Africa are discouraging their governments from building a refinery.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, they won\u2019t get loans anyway because they don\u2019t have very strong banks. The international banks will not support anything like this,<\/em>\u201d Dangote said.<\/p>\n

In April 2024,\u00a0Dangote Refinery commenced the supply of diesel\u00a0and aviation jet fuel to the Nigerian market months after it was commissioned last year.<\/p>\n

The development comes as the Secretary-General of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), Omar Farouk Ibrahim said 75 percent of crude oil produced in Africa is exported to other countries.<\/p>\n

Recall that Dangote had announced that by next month (June), Africa\u2019s most populous country, Nigeria will no longer need to import gasoline due to the operational plans of the Dangote Refinery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking as a panelist at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali, Dangote highlighted that the refinery, which has already commenced supplying diesel and aviation fuel in Nigeria, has the capacity to fulfil the diesel and petrol needs of West Africa and the aviation fuel requirements for the entire African continent.<\/p>\n
