He pointed to the growing insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria and drew parallels to Sudan\u2019s descent into chaos\u2014where government-backed militias were used to silence opposition and enforce ethnic control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1222\">Nyiam warned that the country was on a gradual but dangerous decline, pointing out a familiar pattern: local militias are empowered, authorities look away when vulnerable communities are attacked, and before long, control slips away entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1470\">His comments come amid rising concern about how the Nigerian state is responding to armed violence, especially where ethnic or religious lines are involved. To Nyiam, the writing is on the wall\u2014and ignoring it, he says, would be a tragic mistake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">He gave the warning while delivering a lecture titled: \u201cA Justifiable, Justiciable, and Result Oriented National Security Architecture for Nigerian People\u201d at the Pan-National summit.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2024\/06\/07\/over-150-villagers-confirmed-dead-in-fresh-sudan-massacre\/\">Over 150 Villagers Confirmed Dead In Fresh Sudan Massacre<\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nyiam, a former member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue, recalled how the al-Bashir regime armed Arab Janjaweed militias to unleash terror on Black African populations in Sudan\u2019s Darfur region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">The campaign led to widespread killings, displacement of millions, and what many international observers, including the International Criminal Court, described as genocide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">He accused the Nigerian government, particularly under former President Muhammadu Buhari, of enabling policies that sought to resettle Fulani pastoralists from across West Africa into ancestral lands of indigenous Nigerian communities, without the consent of those affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Nyiam, this situation echoed the dynamics of Sudan\u2019s Janjaweed militias, who were supported by the state in what later became known as the Darfur genocide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are dangerously close to repeating the tragedy of Sudan under Omar al-Bashir, where Arab Janjaweed militias were armed to displace Black Sudanese communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cA similar dynamic emerged under President Buhari\u2019s administration, where policies subtly aimed to resettle Fulani pastoralists from across West Africa into indigenous Nigerian lands without the consent of the host communities\u201d, Nyiam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"629\">For Colonel Tony Nyiam (Rtd.), Nigeria\u2019s security woes aren\u2019t just about bandits or insurgents\u2014they\u2019re rooted in something much deeper: a military culture that has never truly evolved beyond its colonial DNA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"794\">\u201cOur military still functions like a colonial force\u2014arrogant, top-down, and dangerously out of touch with the people it\u2019s supposed to protect,\u201d Nyiam said bluntly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"1031\">In his view, the core of the problem lies in the structure of authority itself. The armed forces, he argues, remain uncritically loyal to the President, not the people or the Constitution.
