It\u2019s the go-to slogan for every election cycle \u2014 right next to \u201cdividends of democracy\u201d and \u201cwe are committed to the Nigerian dream.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But what does it actually mean?<\/p>\n<p>Simple: They give you a branded bag of rice, and collect your destiny in return.<\/p>\n<p>Every 4 years, a familiar scene unfolds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A rented canopy.<\/li>\n<li>A plastic chair.<\/li>\n<li>One Honourable Minister, dressed like she\u2019s attending a traditional wedding, arrives two hours late.<\/li>\n<li>And youths, after queuing under the sun, are \u201cempowered\u201d with:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8211; \u20a670,000 worth of sewing machines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; One carton of Indomie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A certificate titled <em>\u201cYouths, the Future of Tomorrow (Terms and Conditions Apply)\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>All captured on camera, complete with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drone shots,<\/li>\n<li>30 hashtags,<\/li>\n<li>And the same old press release:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe remain committed to youth empowerment and innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Innovation how? The only innovation here is how they recycle the same 1999 empowerment template with new buzzwords like \u201cdigital inclusion\u201d and \u201cagrotech synergy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be real: Nigeria is the only place where empowerment is a euphemism for appeasement \u2014 an insult served on a branded nylon bag.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1><strong>Read also: <a title=\"Permalink to: Jumping Like WiFi Since 1999: A Satirical Series\u2014Part 13\" href=\"https:\/\/africatodaynewsnewyork.com\/2025\/08\/05\/jumping-like-wifi-since-1999-a-satirical-series-part-13\/\">Jumping Like WiFi Since 1999: A Satirical Series\u2014Part 13<\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They promise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cOne million digital jobs.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c10,000 software engineers.\u201d<br \/>\nBut at the empowerment event, they give out:<\/li>\n<li>3 wheelbarrows,<\/li>\n<li>7 clippers,<\/li>\n<li>And a generator with no petrol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The only thing growing in these \u201cempowerment schemes\u201d is the wallet of the contractor who supplied 200 overpriced grinding machines that stopped working after 4 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the real youths \u2014 those coding, innovating, creating value \u2014 get no mention. No support. No infrastructure. But on Twitter, the government\u2019s official handle is quoting Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>And when you protest? They reply:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe youth are lazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No sir. The youth are tired.<\/p>\n<p>Tired of being reduced to photo ops and WhatsApp groups.<br \/>\nTired of being used during elections and dumped like expired INEC result sheets.<br \/>\nTired of \u201cyouth inclusion\u201d that means appointing a 58-year-old as Senior Special Assistant on Gen Z Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>They say \u201cthe youth are the future.\u201d But what kind of future are we talking about when:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NYSC pays \u20a670,000 in an economy where a bag of rice is \u20a680,000?<\/li>\n<li>Tech hubs have no light.<\/li>\n<li>And scholarships are announced only in obituary pages?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear: real empowerment is not handouts \u2014 it\u2019s opportunity.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s policy. Infrastructure. Access.
