Malaysian<\/a> authorities have confirmed that it has confiscated a Chinese registered dredger suspected of looting some of the wrecks of British warships that sunk off the east coast of the peninsula during World War II.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Fuzhou-registered Chuan Hong 68 was apprehended off the coast of the Malaysian state of Johor on May 28, according to a statement posted on Facebook by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Officers discovered 100 unexploded artillery munitions on board during a combined operation with police.<\/p>\n

The agency’s photos revealed stacks of rusting metal on the boat’s deck, as well as cranes and cutting equipment.<\/p>\n

‘Maritime Malaysia (Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency) does not rule out the possibility that this vessel is involved in the theft of old British warship wrecks,’ the statement said.<\/p>\n

The HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales sank in the South China Sea after being attacked by Japanese fighter aircraft in December 1941. Nearly 850 sailors were killed in one of the worst disasters in British naval history.<\/p>\n

The wrecks are designated war graves and are not supposed to be disturbed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are distressed and concerned at the apparent vandalism for personal profit,\u201d Dominic Tweddle, the director general of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, said in a statement after Malaysian media \u2013 tipped off by local fishermen \u2013 reported suspicious activity around the wrecks.<\/p>\n

The Chuan Hong was initially detained for anchoring without a permit.<\/p>\n

Its crew of 32, including 21 Chinese nationals, 10 Bangladeshis and a Malaysian, were being questioned, officials said.<\/p>\n

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters that the government was aware of the case.<\/p>\n

The Chinese Embassy in Kuala Lumpur was in touch with the Malaysian authorities and had asked them to \u201chandle the case justly in accordance with law\u201d, she said, adding that Chinese citizens\u2019 \u201csecurity and lawful rights and interests\u201d must also be protected.<\/p>\n
